The History of Glen Manga Farms

The Danvers Historical Society, a private not-for-profit organization established in 1889 with the mission "to find, acquire, and preserve things which demonstrate local history, but notably the history and growth of the Town of Danvers," is the owner of Glen Magna Farms. The Society is the caretaker of the Endicott Burial Ground and maintains three historic properties, as well as a museum and office space.

The estate Glen Magna Farms continues to stand out as a prime example of traditional North Shore summer life. It epitomizes the heyday of American gardens, when eclecticism and historicism ruled both the landscape and the built environment.

The richest Salem shipping businessman of the day, Joseph Peabody, purchased a 20-acre Danvers property with a residence that was "in every respect perfectly planned for a gentleman's seat" during the War of 1812. The family used this property as their summer vacation for a total of 144 years, growing it from the original 20 acres purchased to over 330 acres.

The home and gardens were extensively extended and adorned by Ellen Peabody Endicott, Joseph Peabody's granddaughter, who owned the property by 1892. She commissioned Little, Browne and Moore, a Boston architectural company, to create the Mansion's distinctive colonial revival shape in 1893. The Massachusetts Horticultural Society gave Ellen Endicott the Hunnewell Gold Medal in 1926, the year before she passed away. This honor was granted to the owner of an estate of at least three acres that had been tastefully and effectively landscaped with rare and desired ornamental trees and plants to highlight excellent applications of science, talent, and good judgment to the adornment of the rural home.

The Farms received constant care from her son, William Crowninshield Endicott, Jr., who upgraded and improved the property until his death in 1936. He had a key role in the 1901 addition of the Derby Summer House, which was constructed in 1794. Since 1968, the two-story Adamesque structure has been recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

The eleven acres in the center of the property were bought by The Danvers Historical Society in 1963, and since then, they have labored to bring the grounds and gardens back to their early 20th-century condition.
